about

Barrakuda McMurder is a thing that happened because I wrote a song called “it’s A Slow Craw To The Finish Line” that I thought my band, The Steinways, would do a terrible job of playing, but I figured Chris Pierce and I could play it just fine. Since then, it’s what I call the music I make when it’s just me or just me and a drummer. The origins of the name are lost to time, but, you’re right, it’s a realy, really good band name; thanks for noticing. Like most/all pop punk songs, these songs are chock full of tremendously embarrassing lyrical moments, but I’m especially embarrassed by the pejorative toss out of “gay” in “Oh My God You Guys…” as well as the casual “retarded” dropped in “...Sweatpants…” I was young(er) and dumb(er) and blah, blah, bah, but yeah, sorry those moments exist and sorry if they make you want to die. That’s certainly how they make me feel, but, whether I like them or not, they exist, so here they are.

Tracks 1-4 were recorded in October 2020 at Volume IV in New Jersey by Chris Pierce. They were mixed in May 2023 by Luke McNeill. Lead guitars were leisurely recorded by me in my apartment in New Jersey between 2021-2023. Backing vocals for track 1 were recorded by the singers at their respective residences in May 2023. Nick recorded his “All The Time” vocals in February 2021, Michelle recorded hers in April 2023, and Erin recorded hers in September 2021. An early version (sans backing vocals) of “The Thorns of LIfe” was originally released on Bandcamp in November 2020. Tracks 2-4 are previously unreleased.

Track 5 was recorded in September 2014 at Volume IV in New Jersey by Chris Pierce and was released digitally on Bandcamp the same day.

Tracks 6-12 were recorded in late-ish 2008 at different Volume IV in New Jersey by Chris Pierce. Tracks 9-12 were released in 2009 on the “Slow Crawl” 7’ from It’s Alive Records and House Party Records. Track 6 appeared on the 1999 “Dangerous Intersections IV” compilation 7” on Traffic Street Records. Track 8 appeared on the 1999 “The State I’m In” compilation CD on Crafty Records. Track 7 was released digitally whenever it was I put these up on Bandcamp.

Tracks 13-18 were recorded sometime in August or September of 2009 at a house in Bighamton New York by Phrank Martian. Tracks 13-17 were released on the “More Songs About Girlfriends & Volcanoes” mini-CD on Traffic Street Records in 2010. Tracks 17 and 18 showed up on Bandcamp at some point.

Tracks 19-22 and 24 were recorded between 2012 and 2020 in various apartments in Queens, New York and Guttenberg, New Jersey by Grath Madden. Track 19 appeared on the “44 Golden Greats” Mutant Pop Records tribute double CD in 2021. Track 24 was released on the Barrakuda McMurder/Mikey Erg split floppy disk on Bloated Kat Records in 2013; Track 22 appeared on the “Dukey” digital compilation, released by the inimitable (not that you’d want to) Chris Johnson in 2013. Track 20 was released as a digital Christmas split single with Crunchcoat in 2020. Track 21 showed up on Bandcamp one day.

Track 23 was recorded in December of 2012 at an apartment in Manhattan, NY by Jonnie Whoa Oh. Backing vocals were recorded shortly thereafter in, presumably, a basement in Iowa City, IA by Kane. It appeared on the “Keeping Adam Alive” compilation lathe cut/7” on Swamp Cabbage Records and Brassneck Records in 2013.
